About Older Than You Think
Every round of Older Than You Think puts two things side by side, such as the fax machine and the American Civil War, and asks which one came first. You tap your pick, and both dates appear on a brass timeline so you can see the size of the gap, along with a short note explaining the answer.
The day's run is sixteen pairs long and climbs from easy calls to ones that make you double-check the dates. Inventions, historical events and brands are all fair game, and many turn out to be older than they feel. A fresh run of pairs goes up at midnight New York time.
How to play
- Look at the two items and decide which one existed or happened first.
- Tap the older one, or use the up and down arrow keys.
- Read both dates and the short explanation that follows.
- Keep going until all sixteen pairs are done.
Tips
- Brands and inventions are often older than they seem, so lean earlier when an item feels modern.
- Read the explanation after each pair; the dates you pick up can help with similar pairs on later days.
Time and controls
A round takes about 3–5 minutes. On a phone, tap the item that came first; on a computer, click it or press the up or down arrow.
