Games like Contexto

Contexto hides a single word and ranks every guess by how closely it relates to the answer, using an algorithm trained on large amounts of text. A guess ranked 5,000 is a long way off, while one ranked 20 is circling the target. Guessing is unlimited, and the satisfaction is watching a vague topic sharpen, guess by guess, into the exact word.

Picks were chosen for that hot-and-cold search through ideas, where each guess returns a measure of closeness rather than letter colors. Games that score meaning directly come first, then ones that measure closeness through a family tree, the alphabet or a globe, then puzzles about hidden text and analogies, and finally two more games from Contexto's makers.

Questions

How does Contexto rank words?

An algorithm trained on large amounts of text places every word by how often it appears in similar contexts to the secret one, and your guess is shown with its position in that list. Number one is the answer. The rankings follow usage rather than dictionary definitions, so a word that often appears near the answer can rank well even if it means something different.

Can I get a hint or play past Contexto puzzles?

Yes. The menu includes a hint button that reveals a word closer than your best guess so far, an option to give up and see the answer, and a list of previous games for playing earlier days. Hints are handy when you are stuck in the thousands with no idea which direction to go.

What is the difference between Contexto and Semantle?

Both score guesses by meaning. Contexto shows each guess as a rank, which is easy to read from the very first word, while Semantle gives a similarity number and only shows a rank once you reach the thousand nearest words. That makes Contexto easier to read early on and Semantle more demanding.
