Games like Phrazle

Updated

Phrazle hides a short phrase instead of a single word and gives you six attempts to find it. Every guess has to use real words and fill every space, and the tiles then report back in four colors: green when a letter is placed correctly, orange for one that belongs in that word but elsewhere, purple for one that belongs to another word in the phrase, and grey when a letter is absent from the phrase entirely. That purple tile is what sets it apart, making each guess a question of which word a letter lives in.

Up top are games that keep colored-tile feedback across several words at once, led by one that shares the purple signal. Next come phrase reveals in the hangman tradition and the plain Wordle format, while the final picks build or decode a hidden phrase in other ways, through tiles, symbols or nested clues.

Questions

What does purple mean in Phrazle?

Purple flags a letter the phrase contains, but in a different word from the one you put it in. Orange, by contrast, means the letter belongs in that same word but in another position, and green means it is exactly right. Grey letters do not appear anywhere in the phrase, so you can drop them from later guesses.

Are there tips for a good first guess in Phrazle?

Phrazle's own strategy notes suggest words packed with common letters. E, A and I lead the vowels, and T, N, R, S and L are the most useful consonants. Its suggestions include short words such as 'the' or 'and' and five-letter openers like 'crane' or 'slate', and every guess must still be made of real words that fill all the spaces.

Where else can I play phrase puzzles like Phrazle?

Thirdle uses the same purple color for letters that belong to another word in its three-word crossword. Phrasle and Mislettered reveal a concealed phrase one letter per guess, and Lettered and Tracell build one from tiles on a grid. Phrazle's own page also points to Clue Hurdle, which adds a clue to the phrase format.
