Games like Puckdoku

Updated

Puckdoku is a daily NHL grid: nine cells, each sitting where a row clue meets a column clue, such as Born in Canada or 750+ career games. You have nine shots, every pick uses one whether right or wrong, a player can appear only once and a choice cannot be changed. A uniqueness score adds up how often your players were picked by others, so lower means rarer. Pyramid, Buddies and Jackpot modes sit beside Classic. Finding the deep cut nobody else thought of is the fun.

Hockey comes first: two more NHL grids, then an NHL Connections board and a hockey player guesser. After that the list follows the same row-and-column format into baseball, basketball, the NFL and soccer, with a few twists on scoring and lives, and ends with a pro wrestling night that includes its own grid.

The nearest relative: another nine-square NHL board where team clues meet achievement clues, like a milestone reached in one season, nine guesses in total, and a rarity score you want to keep low, Puckdoku's uniqueness idea under another name.

Immaculate Grid: Baseball

Basketball's version: each square pairs two clues, for example a franchise with the decade a player was drafted, and after nine guesses an overtime phase begins, close to how NHL Grid handles hockey.

Hoopgrids

A looser NBA grid: you can guess as often as you like in each square, rarity updates as you go, and hint, reverse and friend-duel modes are on offer, a contrast to Puckdoku's strict nine shots.

Sports Reference's football edition: every square crosses two categories, one combination being a franchise with All-Pro first-team honors, and nine guesses have to cover the board, the same discipline Puckdoku asks for.

Questions

How does the uniqueness score work in Puckdoku?

Puckdoku adds up the percentage of players who picked each of your answers, then adds 100 for every cell left empty. A lower total means your players were rarer choices, so obscure correct answers help you most. Immaculate Grid: Hockey and The Grid reward uncommon answers in a similar way.

Do relocated teams count in Puckdoku?

Yes, as a single franchise. Players and stats from the Hartford Whalers, for example, count toward the Carolina Hurricanes. Special retro team categories are the exception: they ignore relocation, so in those cells a player who suited up for the Nordiques does not count for the Avalanche.

What counts as a shot in Puckdoku?

Every selection, right or wrong, uses one of your nine shots, a player can only be chosen once, and a pick cannot be changed after it is made. To keep a streak you need all nine cells correct on the day the puzzle comes out. The game's player data comes from Elite Prospects.
