Games like Raddle

Updated

Raddle is a word transformation game from The Mystery League, the puzzle outfit of Sandy Weisz. Each day's puzzle runs from a start word to an end word, and every rung in between is a change of some kind: an anagram, a swapped letter, a word that pairs with the last one. The catch is that the clues come shuffled, so you have to find the one that fits the current word before stepping forward, working down or switching to solve upward. Each ladder carries a theme, with a short note about it.

Clued word chains come first, since they share Raddle's habit of solving each step from a hint, starting with one built on themed chains. Then come ladders that reveal a theme or reuse letters in new ways, and plain one-letter ladders, including one you can attack from either end, as Raddle allows. A few clue-solving word puzzles close the list.

Every answer is the previous one's letters plus one more, reshuffled, which echoes Raddle's anagram rungs. The main ladder runs eight steps, and a five-step version suits a shorter session.

anagramish

Its ladders join two five-letter words, and every move alters a letter and lets you reorder the others, mixing swaps with anagrams much as Raddle's rungs do. The harder setting caps the ladder at four words.

The plain form of the puzzle: a start word, a target word and one changed letter at a time, and every rung must be a valid word. Ladders of four, five and six letters set the difficulty, a pared-back warm-up for Raddle.

Daily Acrostic

Crossword-style clues produce answers whose numbered letters fill a grid, and the grid gradually reads as a trivia fact, so many small solves build toward a hidden whole, as Raddle's rungs do.

Questions

How do you play Raddle?

Each Raddle starts at one word and ends at another, and every rung between them is a transformation, such as an anagram or a changed letter. The clues for those steps arrive in random order, so you pick the clue that fits the current word and use it to work out the next one. A tutorial walks first-time players through it.

Can you solve Raddle from the bottom up?

Yes. Raddle lets you switch direction and solve upward from the end word, which helps when the clues near the top are giving you trouble. DailyFunGames Word Ladder offers a similar choice, letting you build from either end, though its rungs change a single letter rather than following clues.

Who makes Raddle?

Raddle comes from The Mystery League, Sandy Weisz's puzzle outfit, and each puzzle is numbered and themed, with a short note about the theme alongside the ladder. Past puzzles sit in an archive, so you can work back through earlier themes once the day's ladder is done.
