Games like Squareword

Updated

Squareword describes itself as a word game played in two dimensions. The hidden answer is a 5x5 square of letters in which each of the five rows and each of the five columns spells a word, and you uncover it by typing five-letter words that show where their letters belong in the grid. Every guess can help several words at once, the goal is the smallest guess count, and a new numbered puzzle arrives every day. Watching a row and its crossing column lock together is the payoff.

The order runs from grids where guesses feed several words at once, through 5x5 squares you solve by swapping or flipping letters until every line works, to a few puzzles in which crossing or parallel words share one pool of guesses or tiles.

Swapple

nibble.games · Words

Starts from a 5x5 board where every row and column must end up a word, as in Squareword, but you trade letter positions instead of guessing, guided by green and yellow tiles, with more stars for using fewer swaps.

Facet

playfacet.com · Words

Asks you to construct a true word square: five words go across a 5x5 grid and the very same five must read down the columns in matching order, so every letter does double duty, as in Squareword.

Wordcrux

wordcrux.com · Words

Fills a small crossword by entering whole five-letter words, with correct letters staying put so crossings build on each other as in Squareword, but three misses on a single square finish your game.

Twinwords

playatyours.com · Words

Unolingo

USA Today · games.usatoday.com · Words

A grid of crossing words with an alphabet rule on top: each line across and down must be valid, all 26 letters must be used once apiece, and there are no clues, only logic and vocabulary.

Crossflip

puzzmallow.com · Words

Every row and column has to spell a word, as in Squareword, but you get there by flipping double-sided tiles so the grid matches the day's theme instead of its decoy, with a par number of flips to meet.

Blockle

Rowdle

rowdle.io · Words

Asks only for rows: you shuffle letters from one row to another until each line spells a word, ignoring columns entirely, in several grid sizes, each with its own swap target to hit.

Questions

How does Squareword work?

The answer is a square of 25 letters in which all five rows and all five columns are words. You type five-letter guesses, and the game shows where those letters fall in the square, so one guess can help several rows and columns at once. The aim is a finished square with the lowest guess count you can manage.

Is there a crossword version of Squareword?

crosswordle.org applies Wordle colors to every entry of its 5x5 and 7x7 crosswords, giving each word as many tries as it has letters, and Wordcrux fills a mini crossword with whole five-letter words whose correct letters stay in place. Both keep Squareword's habit of letting one word's letters help its neighbors.

What if I want a word square without guessing?

Facet has you construct a 5x5 square whose rows and columns spell the same five words, and Swapple starts with every letter on the board and lets you rearrange them, with colored tiles marking progress. Unolingo adds the rule that each letter of the alphabet is used exactly once.
