What Bells & Whistles is
Bells & Whistles is a picross-style logic grid in which every square ends up holding either a bell or a whistle. Numbers beside each row describe runs of bells, numbers above each column describe runs of whistles, and both sets have to be true at once. It comes from Puzzmallow, a two-person studio in the UK that designs its own puzzles.
How a round works
Read a row clue such as 3 1 as a block of three bells, then a single bell further along, with at least one gap between blocks. Column clues do the same job for whistles. Tapping a cell cycles it from bell to whistle to blank; a right-click runs the cycle the other way, and tapping a row or column label flips which symbol comes first. A finished line turns its label green, and clicking that label drops the other symbol into the line's leftover cells, which saves taps. A timer runs above the board and can be hidden, Undo and Reset are beside it, and tabs below switch between Mini, Classic and Large grids.
Good if you like…
- Nonogram: Nonogram is the plain form of the same idea: number clues on every line count runs of shaded squares, and a picture appears when you finish, with three hints available.
- Pipcross: Pipcross bends the nonogram format another way, building its runs from the pips on nine dice dropped into the grid, where a run can stretch across neighboring dice.
- Twill: Twill also fills every square with one of two marks, light or dark, but its rules are even splits per line and no three alike in a row rather than counted runs.
- Etch: Etch is a straight nonogram that reveals a picture as you shade, and its grid grows over the week, from 10x10 on weekdays to 20x20 by Sunday.
