What The Daily Spell is
The Daily Spell pairs a drop quote puzzle with a serialized story: each day's solve unscrambles a sentence and opens the next installment. Stories come in separate volumes, from an original fantasy told through newspaper headlines to Oscar Wilde's The Importance of Being Earnest and, as of November 2026, The Book of Dragons, E. Nesbit's collection from 1899.
How a round works
Pick today's date card and press Solve puzzle. The puzzle is a drop quote, so letters are placed column by column until the scrambled sentence reads properly. Solving it opens the next part of the story, and the card for the following day counts down to its release, with the changeover at 12 a.m. in New York. Volumes stand alone, so any one can be started fresh, and the finished Yliad Arc, which ran from November 2025 to March 2026, is playable from start to end. Progress is kept in browser storage, where it can vanish, so Settings lets you copy it or carry it to another browser. Bonus puzzles about Yliad characters come with the newsletter.
When The Daily Spell resets
Everyone gets the same The Daily Spell puzzle, and it changes at 12:00 a.m. in New York (Eastern time), whatever the season.
When the other daily games reset is on one page of reset times.
Good if you like…
- Wrodeo: Wrodeo also works on real text, a quote or a passage from a book with most letters gone, but you restore it by guessing whole words and can lean on a small supply of hints.
- Typeshift: Typeshift also keeps letters locked in columns that you move up and down to form a word across one row, and it ends once each letter has appeared in some word, with no story attached.
- Word Slicer: Word Slicer works by moving columns of letters too, shifting them until five words of five letters line up across the rows, a close cousin of the drop quote without the story.
- Guess The Book: Guess The Book stays with literature but asks for a title: from a brief passage plus its count of Goodreads ratings, name the book, gaining details with each miss or skip.
