Games like FoodGuessr

Updated

FoodGuessr is three daily food games sharing one streak. The main one, Classic, shows a dish through its photo, ingredients and a short description and gives you five guesses per round, over three rounds, to name the country or region it comes from. A miss brings a compass and a warmth reading, and after two misses the dish's name appears. A first-try answer earns the full 5,000 points. Cuisine Match and Plate-Off round out the day, and the reward is learning where a meal belongs.

Games that ask which country a plate belongs to lead the list, since that is FoodGuessr's Classic question, followed by a plate-versus-plate game close to Plate-Off and a recipe deduction game in the spirit of Cuisine Match. The last few stay with food from other angles, such as identifying a cheese or judging calories.

Works from the ingredient list alone: you get five guesses at the country behind a dish, its name appears after the third miss and the country's opening letter after the fourth, much like FoodGuessr's two-miss name reveal.

Narrows the plate to cheese: you have six attempts at an unknown cheese, and each one lights up traits such as country of origin, milk type and rind in green or red, so geography still plays a part.

Questions

How are FoodGuessr points counted?

In Classic, getting a dish on the first try is worth the full 5,000 points, with 1,000 taken off for each extra guess. Misses near the answer win some of that back, and each miss adds a compass pointing toward the right place plus a warmth reading for distance, measured between the nearest borders. After two misses the dish's name appears as an extra clue.

What counts as a country in FoodGuessr?

The game uses a loose definition built around food cultures, so places such as Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan and Greenland count on their own. The United States is divided into Hawaii, Alaska and the contiguous states, and the UK into Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and England. When a dish belongs to more than one place, any correct location is accepted.

What are the other FoodGuessr modes?

Besides Classic, the daily set includes Cuisine Match, where you pick which dish fits a given country's cooking, and Plate-Off, where you guess the plate that people liked more out of two. All three feed one Super Streak, and Classic now has a multiplayer challenge. Scrandle is the closest standalone version of Plate-Off.
