About Mate in One
Each Mate in One position comes from a real game and has one move that ends it in checkmate. You find that move by tapping the piece and then the square it should go to, or by dragging it there. Solve it and the next position appears, and you keep going until the ninety-second clock is empty.
The puzzles cover a range of mating patterns, including smothered mates and discovered checks. Mate in One is not a daily puzzle, so there is no wait for tomorrow; you can play another run immediately and as often as you like.
How to play
- Study the position and look for checks that leave the king no escape.
- Tap the piece that delivers mate, then tap its destination square.
- Or drag the piece straight to the square instead.
- Solve as many positions as you can before the clock runs out.
Tips
- Look at every check available first; in a mate-in-one puzzle the answer is always a check.
- Note which squares around the enemy king your pieces already cover, since the mate often depends on them.
Time and controls
A round takes about 90 seconds per run. Tap the piece and its target square, or drag it across, with a finger on a phone or a mouse on a computer.
