About Law of Averages
Law of Averages is a guessing game about other people. You set a dial somewhere between 0 and 100 and hold the stamp to lock in your choice. The target is the average of all the numbers players submit, multiplied by the day's fraction, and the player whose pick sits closest to that target wins.
The fraction varies: some days it is two-thirds, other days three-quarters. Since everyone is trying to predict everyone else, the best pick depends on how many steps ahead you think the crowd is reasoning. The question resets at midnight New York time.
How to play
- Check today's fraction before you choose a number.
- Set your pick by dragging the dial or tapping the plus and minus buttons.
- Hold the stamp to lock in your number.
Tips
- Think about what a typical player will choose, apply the fraction to that, then consider going one step further.
- High numbers are unlikely to win when the fraction is below one, because the target is pulled under the average.
Time and controls
A round takes about About 1 minute. On a phone, drag the dial or use the plus and minus buttons, then hold the stamp; on a computer, keys work as well.
