Games like Semantle

Updated

Semantle's secret word can only be found by meaning, since spelling plays no part. Every one-word guess is scored for similarity using word2vec, the technique the site credits for measuring how related two words are, and guesses that reach the closest thousand also get a place in that ranking. Three numbers above the guess box, for the nearest word, the tenth and the thousandth, show how good a score really is on that day. Guesses never run out, and you can ask for a hint or give up.

The picks keep that search for a word through meaning. Games that score or rank guesses toward one secret word come first, from Contexto's plain ranking to a semantic map, a thermometer and an orbit around a sun, then two that pin the answer down by spelling or length as well, and last three that put closeness in meaning to other uses: bridging clues, linking a pair of words or uncovering a film.

Contexto

Daydash · contexto.me · Words

The closest relative: every word you try gets a position in a ranking drawn from how words appear together in text, and reaching number one wins. Where Semantle leads with a raw similarity score, Contexto gives a rank from the very first guess.

Pimantle

pimanrules · semantle.pimanrul.es · Words

Semantle's idea drawn as a picture: every guess is plotted on a chart of meaning with the hidden word at its center, while marks show where other players are trying. Its menu links to that day's Semantle, and a long archive of numbered rounds sits beside it.

Warmer

games.cyber-jack.uk · Words

Hunts the day's word through meaning as Semantle does, but shows only a rank, with 1 as the answer, and a thermometer climbs as you close in. Four optional hints show a word at rank 300, then 100, 30 and 10, and a fresh word comes at midnight in the UK.

Lessgames' version of the meaning hunt: type a word and a number shows its distance from the answer, with your guesses ranked by similarity, much like Semantle's list. Signing in keeps your stats and allows custom games.

Ranks every guess by meaning, with #1 as the secret word, and draws the hottest words orbiting closest to a sun, a visual take on Semantle's proximity list. It runs in French as well as English.

Dowsle

dowsle.com · Words

Puts spelling back into the hunt: each guess is judged both on how close it comes in meaning, as in Semantle, and on how close it comes in spelling, and each numbered puzzle lasts one day.

Lexicle

lexicle.com · Words

A tighter Semantle: the answer has five letters, its part of speech and a related starting word are given up front, and each of 11 guesses reports how warm it is in meaning along with a new hint.

Chainle

chainle.io · Words

Uses closeness in meaning as the score rather than the trail: you type one word to bridge two or three clues, or the nearest word to a single clue, and earn as much as 1,000 points per round by how well it fits them all.

Linxicon

Trainwreck Labs · linxicon.com · Words

Turns Semantle's similarity math into a building game: link two random words with a chain of others, each joining a neighbor once their similarity tops 40 percent, aiming for the fewest words possible. Trainwreck Labs makes it.

Bingewatcher

Kahen · bingewatcher.org · Movies & TV

Applies the same word-vector idea to film: you type words to reveal the hidden synopsis and crew of a top-grossing US movie, and words close in meaning help fill the gaps until the title comes clear.

Questions

How does Semantle measure how close a guess is?

It uses word2vec, a technique in which each word sits at a measurable distance from every other, reflecting how related they are. The score measures how alike a guess and the hidden word are by that distance, and spelling plays no part. Inside the nearest thousand, the page also shows where a guess ranks.

Can I play earlier Semantle games?

Yes. Semantle's FAQ says every past game stays playable, through the Play Archive link, and Pimantle lists a long run of earlier rounds too. A new Semantle word arrives each day at 8:00 p.m. New York time, and a separate Junior game sits behind the Play Junior button.

Which of these games offer hints?

Warmer has four optional hints that show words at ranks 300, 100, 30 and finally 10, at 100 points apiece. Lexicle gives a related starting word and the answer's part of speech, then a new warm hint with each guess. Contexto's menu has a Hint that shows one word, and Semantle itself offers a hint or a chance to give up.
