What Bracket City is
Bracket City is a clue puzzle in which clues are tucked inside other clues, and solving every one of them turns the day's text into a complete sentence about something that happened on this date in history. The nesting sets the order of play, since you start at the deepest bracket and work your way out.
How a round works
Each puzzle is a single sentence with pieces of it written as bracketed clues, and some of those clues hold smaller bracketed clues inside them. Begin with the innermost ones, which contain no brackets of their own; once they are answered, the clue that wrapped them is the next to take on. Carry on outward until no brackets are left and the sentence reads as a plain historical fact. Your solve earns a rank title on a ladder running from Tourist up to Kingmaker. The puzzle page lists recent dates marked Not Started until you open them, and a See all link leads to older puzzles.
Good if you like…
- Daily Acrostic: Also turns a set of crossword-style clues into a trivia fact, but its answers feed numbered letters into a grid instead of unlocking clues nested in one another.
- Minute Cryptic: Another daily built on cracking clues, though it serves a single cryptic clue with definition and wordplay, where Bracket City stacks many clues inside one sentence.
- 7 Little Words: Leans on short clues too, seven of them, each answered by joining chunks of letters, with no nesting and no historical fact waiting at the end.
- Gisnep: Also ends with a hidden passage restored, but you rebuild a quotation by dropping column letters into place rather than solving clues layer by layer.
