What 4 x 3 is
4 x 3 is a word-grouping puzzle by Hank Green with an unusual overlap: there are four categories of three words each, and a single word fits all four. Each group is therefore that shared word plus two others, so finding the word that belongs everywhere is the key to the board.
How a round works
Nine word tiles fill the board. Pick the words that make up one category and press Submit; Shuffle mixes the tiles when you need a fresh look, and Deselect clears your current selection. Wrong submissions are tallied under Mistakes. An archive lists every earlier daily by date, and replaying an old one leaves today's game alone. The page also links to your history, a set of community puzzles and SMUSH, a separate game about making words from nine letters. Settings and a help button sit at the bottom of the screen.
Good if you like…
- Connections: The familiar form of the grouping idea, sixteen words into four sets of four with four mistakes allowed, where 4 x 3 shrinks things to nine tiles by letting one word serve every group.
- Conexo: Another sorting puzzle that splits sixteen words into four themed sets, with a calendar of past games, compared with the nine tiles and shared word here.
- Codenames Daily: Also about spotting which words share a link, though the link arrives as a clue word and a count, and one wrong tap ends that puzzle.
