What PIVOT is
PIVOT is a word puzzle in which the answer is never secret: a four-letter target is printed from the start, and the work lies in getting its letters into line. Tiles sit in a small grid studded with pivot dots, each dot turns the 2x2 block around it, and you hunt for the shortest series of turns that spells the word across the middle row.
How a round works
A short tutorial comes first, asking you to bring PLAY into the gold line in two moves, and Skip to puzzle jumps past it. The daily board checked for this page was a 3 by 6 grid, with the target word stated in plain text. Tapping a dot rotates the four tiles that surround it, and every rotation adds one to your move count. Once the center row reads the target, the puzzle is solved, and your score is the number of moves you used, lower being better. Everyone gets the same layout each day, results go on a daily leaderboard, and replays animate how the top solvers got there.
Good if you like…
- Flipart: Flipart also works by turning pieces around pivot points, but its pieces are odd shapes with no letters, and the goal is a tidy fit inside a frame instead of a word.
- Tracell: Tracell also handles letters in 2x2 blocks, placing them to trace out a phrase that stays hidden until solved, whereas PIVOT shows its word from the start.
- IdentiFIVE Wheels: IdentiFIVE Wheels spells by rotation as well, though its pieces are wheels of letters, and the job is lining up three words of different lengths at once.
- Barter: Barter also counts how efficiently you move letters, swapping pairs of tiles until six interlocking words read right, with a small allowance above the fewest possible trades.
