Daily grid games

Updated

A grid game deals a board of three rows and three columns, each labeled with a category, and every square wants one answer that satisfies both of its labels: a player who wore two teams' colors, a comedy with a named star, a Fire-type Pokémon from one region. Most allow nine guesses to fill the nine squares, an answer can be used once, and many score how few other players chose the same answer, so a forgotten name beats the obvious one.

Sports come first. Sports Reference runs the Immaculate Grid boards for baseball, pro football, men's and women's basketball, hockey and soccer, and other sites cover the same leagues with rules of their own: unlimited tries, an overtime round, three lives, or a single hidden player who suits all six categories. Films, anime and video games follow, from Pokémon to League of Legends and FromSoftware bosses, then countries, flags, US states and cities.

The last group takes the format beyond trivia about people and places: cars, animals, languages, numbers, words that follow spelling rules, or answers from any field at all. Sudoku, letter grids and logic grids sit on other shelves, since their squares are not filled by matching a row category with a column category.
